Can Anyone Learn to Ring the Bells?

Posted on 7th July, 2026

The simple answer is... yes!

If you've ever stood outside a church listening to the bells and wondered, "Could I ever do that?", the answer is almost certainly yes.

One of the biggest misconceptions about bell ringing is that you need to be musical, incredibly strong or have been doing it since you were a child. None of those things are true.

Every bell ringer started as a complete beginner.

"I'm too old to learn..."

You're probably not!

Bell ringing is one of the few hobbies that really can be enjoyed throughout your life. We have ringers who started as teenagers and others who didn't discover the hobby until later in life.

There's no upper age limit, and many people continue ringing well into their 70s, 80s and beyond.

"I'm not musical."

Good news—you don't need to be!

Change ringing isn't about playing tunes or reading music. It's about learning a fascinating skill, developing good timing and working together as part of a team.

Many excellent bell ringers have never played a musical instrument in their lives.

"Do I need to be strong?"

Not particularly.

Although church bells are heavy, they're carefully balanced. Bell ringing is much more about technique than strength, and your confidence grows with practice.

Our experienced ringers will guide you every step of the way.

"I've never even been inside a bell tower."

Perfect!

That's exactly how every bell ringer begins.

Your first visit is all about getting to know the group, seeing how everything works and asking as many questions as you like. There's no pressure to have a go if you'd rather watch first.

Many people are surprised by just how welcoming and relaxed the atmosphere is.

Bell Ringing Is More Than Just a Hobby

Learning to ring gives you the opportunity to:

  • 🔔 Learn a unique traditional skill
  • 🤝 Meet friendly people from all walks of life
  • 🏰 Explore beautiful historic church towers
  • 🧠 Keep your mind active and improve concentration
  • ❤️ Become part of your local community
  • 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Enjoy a hobby that families can share together

It's one of the few activities where children, parents and grandparents can all take part together.

Perfect for Young People

Bell ringing is a fantastic way for young people to develop confidence, teamwork and responsibility.

These qualities look great on university applications, CVs and apprenticeship applications. Depending on local arrangements, bell ringing may also contribute towards the Volunteering section of the Duke of Edinburgh's Award.

For safeguarding reasons, anyone under the age of 16 must attend with a parent, guardian or responsible adult.

Worried About Fitting In?

Please don't be.

Every one of us remembers our first evening.

We remember wondering whether we'd be able to do it, whether we'd fit in and whether we'd get the hang of it.

The good news is that you'll never be expected to know everything on day one. We'll teach you at your own pace, answer your questions and support you as your confidence grows.

Why Not Come and See for Yourself?

If you've ever been curious about bell ringing, why not come along to one of our practice evenings at St Mary's Church, Lenham?

There's no obligation to join and no pressure to take part straight away. You're very welcome to simply watch, meet the team and discover what bell ringing is all about.

Who knows? You might just discover a hobby you'll enjoy for the rest of your life.

We'd love to welcome you.
